Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show nears, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
