Seven accused members of German far-left organization face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
