Our Leading Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Number One Place.

Initially, Lux could seem closer to a challenging university examination than the latest pop album from an artist who just had a previous single featured an international pop star. Split across 4 different sections and sung in 13 languages, this is a dizzying classical-tinged work exploring female mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal transformation, frequently via the prism of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with raw honesty elsewhere—is launched heavenward here, buoyed by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a long list of collaborators. Its sheer ambition alone makes the efforts of contemporary artists appear quite small.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That this album succeeds in escape dry academic posturing feels nothing short of miraculous, and full praise going to the artist. While this is not the first time album to blend the past with modern styles, its scale feel far higher here, and the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that really elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential sense of playfulness. Similar to the legendary Björk during her height, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. When she's breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to be alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

This playful spirit shines clearly during a stunning Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, everything drops away, and we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment before a comically exaggerated string surge thuds down like cartoonish force. The track immediately segues to the wild track driven by racing strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic with this album is that you never exactly understand—or even wish to predict—what you is going to next."

Almost each track concludes in a totally different place than where it started. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a delicate orchestration before collapsing into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work starts off moody and sinister, with menacing beats, until fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth its jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

A key balancing act of the album involves navigating the line of bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is no surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable hits. A song performed entirely in the English language swells on a chorus that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spirals skyward. That feat gets echoed by another expansive ballad that expands and constricts, weaving layered melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep source of hidden treasure that requires time to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record is a lavish feast at which the characters at it, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flit from conversations about historical saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about hopeless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly creative practitioner.
