The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
