Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
