British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
